Single Barrel is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey produced by Heaven Hill Distillery. It’s unique because it’s the only vintage-dated single barrel bourbon on the market, meaning each bottle comes from one carefully selected barrel and is labeled with the date it was barreled, the date it was bottled, and the specific barrel number. It’s typically aged for around 7-8 years (though older vintages from the early 2000s could be 10+ years), and it’s bottled at 86.6 proof (43.3% ABV).

Origins: The Life of Saint Patrick (5th Century)

Saint Patrick’s Day, celebrated on March 17, commemorates the death of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Born in Roman Britain (likely around 385 CE), Patrick was kidnapped at 16 by Irish raiders and enslaved as a shepherd in Ireland. After six years, he escaped, returned to Britain, and later trained as a priest. Inspired by a vision, he returned to Ireland around 432 CE as a missionary, spreading Christianity across a largely pagan land.

Patrick’s methods were pragmatic—he blended Christian teachings with local traditions, like using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity, which became one of his enduring symbols. He died on March 17, though the exact year is debated (likely 461 or 493 CE). Early Christians in Ireland began honoring his death with a feast day, though it was initially a modest affair.

Days after the events of September 11, 2001, a small US Army Special Forces unit (ODA 595 from Fort Campbell, KY) answered their nation’s call to defend it. They found themselves riding horseback in a Green Beret insertion into Northern Afghanistan to fight the Taliban. With the support of these brave men, the Northern Alliance successfully overthrew Mazar-i-Sharif, a Taliban stronghold. These incredibly patriotic men were given the nickname “The Horse Soldiers” and were honored with America’s Response Monument at Ground Zero, New York, in 2011.

Four ex-Green Berets of ODA 595, later came together to create the 16,000 square-foot American Freedom Distillery in St. Petersburg, Florida. Their whiskey is made in Ohio in collaboration with Middle West Spirits and bottled in Florida. This incredibly patriotic, unique bourbon is bottled in American made glass vials pressed by steel recovered from the twin towers. After 9/11, the New York City Port Authority donated steel recovered from the World Trade Center to Horse Soldier Bourbon. Horse Soldier Bourbon bottles are formed in molds of this steel to honor the spirit of resilience and service that arose after the attack on our nation.

Description:
Caramel, toasted corn, oak, cinnamon and dark fruit nose. The taste is fantastic with hints of oak, vanilla, nutmeg, some mild black pepper spice, and a light bit of honey. Good balance, medium body and a warm spicy feel.
