Sandy Pond Channel Maintenance Association

Sandy Pond Channel Maintenance Association The SPCMA is a group of dedicated people working together to keep the sandy pond channel dredged. The channel is essential to local business and tourism.

The shores of the channel are the only freshwater sand dune in the north east U.S. Just a reminder to everyone who spends a lot of time passing through the channel in the summer. Watch out for the large rocks that are on your port when returning from the lake. They are near the smaller set of spar buoys on the lake side. Last year someone tried to mark them with plastic bottles but hopefully they will be marked better this upcoming season

Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary - Community Survey

survey: https://dlrgroup.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6G81hmEIXNu0Hu6

The DLR Group is working with NOAA ONMS and New York State, co-managers of the Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary, to create the sanctuary's Programming, Partnerships, and Facilities Plan. As part of the plan, they are surveying the community to better understand all the ways people experience Lake Ontario and the new Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary. The survey will help them recommend new programs, events, and places in partnership with existing organizations across the four-county region. The plan will show how the sanctuary could support what people already love about Lake Ontario and suggest new opportunities to make it easier for everyone to visit the lake, learn about its rich cultural and local history, and enjoy the area.

We were asked to help share the survey link with anyone who lives, works, or enjoys the shores and waters of Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary. They want to hear from residents, community organizations, local governments, business owners, and others who are interested in the future and success of the sanctuary. Follow the link to take the survey: https://dlrgroup.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6G81hmEIXNu0Hu6

Drone photos this week showing the change in the channel - the north side entrance is deeper entering the channel still use caution it is not marked by buoys depths ranged from 3 to 8’ the south side should probably only be used by pontoon boats depths ranged from 2’ to 5’
We had several bad storms that put more sand coming off the south spit making a sand bar out into the channel the water levels are predicted to come up by May 18th around 6 inches according to the IJC. Lake Ontario water levels are normally around 246’ - the 3 rock pile buoys are there marking the rock pile on the right going out into the lake Do Not go through them. The deeper water is to the left of them going out into the lake -depths going out into the lake ranged from 4’ to 7’
Let’s hope for warmer weather soon for a great boating season!
