Work in progress for our amazing client. They wanted something creative yet simple so we went with a mix of plumbagos, blue salvias, nandina and yuccas. Combined with shadow rock and a nice Texas blend river rock for contrast. What do y'all think. Will post a completed project later.

I really enjoyed this one.
11 large pots, each with its own personality but still working together as a whole.
This is the part of landscaping I love the most. Every arrangement was built to match the space, the lighting, and the overall feel. No guessing
This is what I do

Ever wonder why your Texas Mountain Laurel doesn’t flower like the others you see around the city?

It’s because there are male and female Mountain Laurels.

While both produce the beautiful, grape-scented purple flowers Texas is known for in early spring, they behave a little differently.

Male Mountain Laurels
• Typically produce more consistent and abundant blooms
• Do not produce seed pods
• Often appear fuller with flowers because all the plant’s energy goes into blooming

Female Mountain Laurels
• Produce the same fragrant flowers but also form seed pods afterward
• Some of the plant’s energy goes into making seeds, so blooms may appear lighter some years
• After flowering, you’ll see thick, fuzzy pods that eventually dry and release bright red seeds

So if your neighbor’s tree is covered in flowers while yours isn’t quite as dramatic, it may simply be a different s*x of the plant—not necessarily a problem with your soil, watering, or care.

Nature just likes variety. 🌿

Starrgazzee Artistry

illustrates a DIY drainage or filtration system, often referred to as a dry well or a soakaway pit. It is designed to manage excess surface water or greywater by allowing it to slowly seep into the ground.
Here is a detailed breakdown of the components labeled in the photo:

COMPONENT BREAKDOWN
🔸 Drainage Bed (Gravel/Crushed Stone):
🔸 The base of the pit is filled with a layer of coarse gravel or crushed stone.
🔸 Function: This acts as a primary filter and creates a large surface area for water to dissipate into the surrounding soil. The annotation indicates a depth of 250–300 mm for this layer.
🔸 Vertical Stack (Recycled Tires):
🔸 Four rubber tires are stacked vertically to form the core chamber of the well.
🔸 Function: Using tires is a cost-effective way to maintain the structural integrity of the pit, preventing the surrounding earth from collapsing while keeping the center hollow to hold a large volume of water during heavy inflow.
🔸 Inlet Pipes:
🔸 Two blue pipes (likely PVC or HDPE) feed into the top of the tire stack.
🔸 Function: These pipes transport water from a source—such as a gutter downspout, a French drain, or a greywater outlet—directly into the filtration chamber.
🔸 Security Grate:
🔸 A metal rebar grate is placed over the opening of the top tire.
🔸 Function: This provides a safety barrier to prevent large debris or animals from falling into the pit while still allowing for ventilation or additional surface water entry.
🔸 Concrete Cover/Slab:
🔸 A square concrete slab with a circular cutout sits on top of the tires at ground level.
🔸 Function: This stabilizes the top of the structure and provides a solid foundation for the grate. It helps blend the system into the surrounding landscape once the edges are backfilled with soil.

SYSTEM DYNAMICS
The blue arrows indicate the flow of water:
🔸 Water enters through the inlet pipes (3).
🔸 It fills the hollow center of the tires (2).
🔸 Gravity pulls the water down through the gravel bed (1), where it is filtered and eventually absorbed into the deep soil.

SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL NOTE
🔸 [!IMPORTANT]
🔸 While recycled tire wells are common in some DIY projects, please be aware that in many regions, using tires for underground drainage is regulated or restricted due to concerns about chemicals leaching from the rubber into the groundwater. Always check local building codes and environmental regulations before constructing a soakaway system.
