🎙️ **DID YOU MISS IT?**

When was the last time you experienced a moment of joy but almost didn't notice it?

During my recent conversation with Andrew Keaveney, we got into an interesting discussion about happiness.

I shared something I've been noticing in my work as a therapist.

People will sometimes tell me they're having trouble finding joy in their lives. But as we talk about their week, they'll mention a beautiful walk, time with someone they love, or a moment when they felt genuinely content.

And I'll ask, "Could that have been a moment of joy?"

Sometimes we become so focused on what we're anticipating, worrying about, or trying to accomplish that we overlook what's happening right now.

Andrew and I explore this alongside breathwork, meditation, nervous system regulation, and the importance of adapting to the changing seasons of our lives.

One of my favorite takeaways?

**Maybe happiness isn't only something we pursue. Maybe it's also something we practice noticing.**

You finally have a little space in your day, but instead of settling into it, you start thinking about what else you could get done. Rest becomes something you can have once everything is handled, and somehow that moment keeps moving.

In my conversation with Andrew Keaveney , we explored the value we place on activity and how difficult it can be to make room for anything else. I shared how challenging that becomes when our worth feels tied to outward productivity.

Sometimes the question is bigger than whether we can find ten minutes to pause. It’s what we believe those ten minutes say about us. Are we falling behind? Letting someone down? Being less capable than we used to be?

Those are experiences worth approaching with curiosity. You don’t have to turn rest into another thing to accomplish well.

Maybe you’ve tried to talk yourself into feeling safe, hoping your body would finally settle. You don’t have to convince yourself that everything is safe.

The way I teach it, what matters most is how you approach your body. We’re exploring a different relationship with it, one where a sensation can be noticed, worry can be acknowledged, and care can be there without needing the pain to disappear first.

This is my teaching framework, and it doesn’t replace medical care. Getting checked and treated when you need it always matters.

Sometimes the first opening is as simple as noticing what you’re expecting and asking yourself, is there another possibility?

Come explore this with me at Reiki for Chronic Pain & Illness, a two-day retreat near Philadelphia on November 20 and 21.

Enrollment is open, and there are only 6 spots.

🎙️ **JUST DROPPED!**

Finding Your Center in a Changing World: Andrew Keaveney on Breathwork, Nervous System Regulation and the Seasons of Life

I've been thinking about something Andrew and I discussed during our conversation:

We spend so much time trying to change how we feel that sometimes we forget to consider whether our expectations need to change.

Andrew teaches breathwork and meditation, and we had a fascinating conversation about how our breath influences our emotional experience, the science behind SKY Breath Meditation, and why nervous system regulation is an ongoing practice—not something we do once and check off our list.

We also explored rest, productivity, aging, changing bodies, and the different seasons of our lives.

And toward the end, we talked about something I particularly loved: **happiness as a practice.**

Not necessarily something we achieve when everything finally falls into place, but something we might learn to recognize in the ordinary moments we're already experiencing.

🎙️ **DROPPING TOMORROW!**

What if nervous system regulation isn't about getting ourselves to feel calm all the time?

What if it's about learning to respond to whatever season of life we're in?

Tomorrow on *The Spiritually Curious Therapist*, I'm joined by Andrew Keaveney, who teaches breathwork and meditation through the Art of Living.

We explore how our breathing influences our emotions, what the research tells us about breathwork and nervous system regulation, and why developing a regular practice can be so valuable.

But we also get into something I've been thinking about quite a bit lately...

How often do we expect ourselves to function the way we did five, ten, or even twenty years ago—even when the conditions of our lives have completely changed?

And what happens when we stop fighting those changes and begin meeting ourselves where we are?

You notice discomfort, and right away there’s that familiar urge to check it again.

This is where I bring in Reiki. I teach it as a way to practice presence, compassionate attention and care, using meditation, natural breathing, the Reiki precepts and gentle self-touch.

So before you follow that urge, you pause. You notice the chair supporting you, rest a hand somewhere comfortable, and tell yourself, I’m feeling worried right now. Then you ask, what needs my attention, and what am I predicting?

If you’d like to learn this practice with me in person, join me at Reiki for Chronic Pain & Illness Retreat near Philadelphia on November 20 and 21.

Enrollment is open for just 6 people.

You make a mistake, and right away the inner critic starts in. You should know better by now. What’s wrong with you?

My guest on the podcast,Nelson Whiting , shared a picture I keep coming back to. Imagine a little one learning to walk who keeps falling down. None of us would look at that child and say they’re bad. They just haven’t figured it out yet. As Nelson put it, “You’re just like a child who hasn’t figured this out yet,” and he asked why we would ever berate ourselves for something we didn’t know.

I love how gentle this is. So many of us expect ourselves to already have skills we were never taught. Offering yourself the same patience you’d give that child can make room for learning instead of blame.

Nelson and I talk about this and so much more in our full conversation. Link in bio to start listening. 🎧

People often ask me where they should start, and my answer is always the same.

You don’t have to know before you reach out.

If you live with chronic pain or illness and want to learn a practice you can do at home, my Reiki retreat is a great place to begin. It’s two days, near Philadelphia, with just six people and we have one happening in November 2026.

If one problem keeps showing up in your life no matter what you try, From Lock to Liberation gives us focused time to work on it. You can do the full 12-week program, one 4-hour intensive, or a lighter version if you want to start slow.

If you want steady support week after week, we can meet for therapy over Zoom.

In any of these, I might use Brainspotting, Pain Reprocessing Therapy, or Reiki.
You don’t need to choose a tool.
We figure that out together.

Book a free consultation through the link in my bio, and we’ll find what fits.

**You’ve tried so many things. You get some relief. So why does the pain keep coming back?**

Acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage, Reiki—you may leave an appointment feeling better, only to find yourself back in the same cycle days or even hours later. It’s exhausting, especially when you don’t understand why relief isn’t lasting.

**Understanding persistent pain is a central part of this retreat.** We’ll explore how pain works, why the nervous system can continue sounding an alarm even after tissues have healed, and how fear, attention, stress, and past experiences can influence that alarm. Your pain is real. Learning about these processes can open up new ways to respond.

We’ll pair that understanding with self-Reiki and gentle meditative practices to explore a greater sense of safety in your body. The invitation is to gradually “widen the container”—developing more room for sensations and emotions without immediately needing to brace, fight, or escape them.

The goal isn’t to force yourself to relax or make symptoms disappear. It’s to build understanding, practice responding with less fear, and discover moments of comfort and choice—even when symptoms are present.

**Come to understand your pain differently—and learn practices you can carry into daily life.**

Have you ever done everything right and still felt stuck?

You took away the trigger. You found a distraction. You pushed through the urge again and again.

And somehow the habit is still here.

My guest this week, Nelson Whiting, said something that really landed for me. When we’re coping, we’re still fighting. And when we’re fighting, our system is still in survival mode.

That doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means the real thing underneath hasn’t been reached yet.

Nelson and I talked about where those deeper patterns come from, why shame shows up under so many of them, and what helps people finally shift.
