Great ‘Veneto’ class last Tuesday! It was such a pleasure to revisit a region which has, to be honest, fallen off my radar. So. Much. Wine… is made in the Veneto!

The following producers show restraint in the vineyard and an unvarnished approach in the winery. Quality is in the glass baby!

Considered the rooftop of European winemaking, Valle d’Aosta is one of Italy’s smallest regions. The village/sub-regions of Morgex, La Salle and Enfer d’Arvier are found along the western edge at altitudes of 800-1200m.

Ermes Pavese and Danilo Thomain are iconic producers up here, among just a few scattered along the ancient Roman terraces of Aosta. They cultivate native grapes like Prie Blanc and Petite Rouge and bottle for themselves 🔥Check out their story with my monthly membership, Passaporto.

Fresh and approachable Barbaresco from rising star Francesco Versio. His skills were honed alongside Bruno Giacosa, one of the luminaries of this part of the Langhe. The fruit comes from Neive, a commune know for spice and a more expansive palate when compared to Barbaresco proper. Open, then stand for 30min in the bottle and marvel at how the fruit opens like a flower.

Sourced from San Cristoforo, Curra, Starderi and Albesani fruit. Francesco ferments in steel with native yeast and ages in neutral casks of several sizes 🔥
