I found this little guy in the basement the other day, no idea where he came from. He's not quite so fancy as our toritos at home, but I'll take all the help I can get.

In Peru you'll find these pairs of ornate ceramic pucará placed on the ridges of homes as a sort of totemic solicitation of prosperity. One of those things that colonizers brought along (the Spanish bull) that was subsumed into and fused with the Aymara/Quechua culture.

Tasty Tuesday alert: come in and grab a sip of this divine Viña Ardanza Rioja that was requested by not one, but three people inside of a week.

It's a big, powerful blend of tempranillo and garnacha, which is unusual for this region. The blend dials down the earthy/barnyard character that can, to me, sometimes turn me off from a pure tempranillo slugger. Ardanza has it figured out with this complex cherry/currant/spicy blend that Julia next door says "needs to be drunk with cheese". Some manchego and patatas bravas later and you're ready for botellón!

I'm gonna run out of adjectives

I've never had a wine quite like this Pax Mahle Trousseau Gris before, probably because the grape is only planted in one place in the USA.

Crisp and somehow lush, bright, and melon-y all at once, it's also made in a style called "ramato". TECHNICALLY this makes it a skin-contact / "orange" wine, but the actual skins involved are pinkish gray to begin with, hence absolutely divine rosé-like color.

So, so good.

Brought a few new aperitifs into the shop this week! These guys are collectively referred to as "quinquinas" because they use quinine from cinchona bark for flavoring. Great for sipping on ice or with a splash of (highly complementary!) tonic water.

Also good if you have malaria! Plasmodium won't stand a chance!

Great timing on this one... Today I'm disposing of 54 liters of oxidized box rose!

Sometimes the manufacturer screws up! The great people at Communal got ahead of this pretty quickly and let me know proactively to dispose of this spoiled batch. This isn't a problem inherent to wine bags, it's either poor vinting or contamination of batches on their way to packaging. These boxes ought to have been good for another 6 months or more on the shelf.

If you're KP or RW, I owe you a replacement bottle or two :)

Being serious here: boxed wine has come an incredibly long way since you were slapping a four dollar bag of Franzia White Zinfandel. There's great wines, including this stalwart Lab vinho tinto, available in boxes. You can come in today, or any time the next week, and taste for yourself!

The unopened shelf life for these wines MIGHT be slightly shorter than that of bottled wine, but their opened shelf life is VASTLY longer. This wine will be good for 3 weeks or so after opening. As a fan of Moderation myself, this makes a box a great option for a quick nightly sip with dinner.

No fuss, no worries about leftovers, no need to finish an entire bottle by yourself and wake up feeling like your skull has been in a panini press...

New on the shelf: a brown gin??

"Old Tom" Gin was the style predominant in the UK and USA in the mid-1800s. Apocryphally named after mounted plaques featuring black cats that served to identify underground pubs in London, this gin is barrel-ahead after distillation to further mellow and blend the botanical flavors. It also adds a hint of wood that matches the piney nature of juniper berries.

Relatively rare in modern spirits catalogue, this one is from Oregon. Use it to make a Martinez: like a Manhattan except with gin!
