with Tim Farrell

An Aussie Affair
with Tim Smith and Hamish Thomson
We are thrilled to welcome two of our absolute favorite Australian producers to Maxwell Alley! Hamish Thomson’s family has owned Best’s Great Western in Victoria for generations. The winery, which is celebrating its 160th anniversary this year, produces a stunning variety of wines in the cool climes of the Grampians appellation.
Tim Smith is one of the Barossa Valley’s most-respected winemakers. His Rhone-inspired wines (including Grenache, Shiraz and Roussanne) represent a terrific balance of Australian opulence with old-world restraint.

Wine Essentials: Describing Flavor
with Tim Farrell
“Earthy,” “Jammy,” “Peppery,” “Mineral.” Do you ever hear these words spoken by a wine geek and think, “WHAT are they talking about?” It’s true, the complicated vocabulary known as “winespeak” contains a lot of useless words, but there are certainly a handful of commonly-used descriptors for wine that are incredibly effective at communicating to others just what your taste buds sense. CoolVines wine director, Tim Farrell, will pour many examples of wines that illustrate some of the most the widely-used tasting notes associated with wine.
