Tucked away in The Colony is a hidden gem. And I mean actually hidden.

Red Phone Booth is a speakeasy of the first order. Ci**rs are plentiful, the spirits list runs deep, the staff makes you feel welcome, and the atmosphere is exactly what you picture when someone says “speakeasy.”

In the glass, Michter’s Rye. Beautiful, spice-driven and damn good neat or over a chunk. Alongside an excellent Plasencia Robusto, it was pretty hard to beat.

If you don’t know Red Phone Booth is there, you’ll be hard pressed to find it.

But trust me. It’s worth looking.

I’d be hard pressed to count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen a Canadian wine on a Texas wine list. It just doesn’t happen.

So when Truluck’s in Dallas had one tucked away in the Pinot section, there was no chance we were passing it up.

Le Clos Jordanne Pinot Noir from the Niagara Peninsula is purely Burgundian in style: tart cherry, bright red fruit, beautiful minerality and a long, lingering finish.

Stunning on its own. Pair it with damn near whatever you want.

The important takeaway? If you see this bottle, order it.

Trust me on this one.

At the risk of offending more California producers than I can count, Robert Sinskey might just be my absolute favorite. I was a club member for years. Literally.

They simply don’t make a bad bottle of anything.

Especially their Vin Gris of Pinot Noir, otherwise known as rosé.

Tart strawberry and red raspberry, bracing acidity, and a long, lingering finish, all presented in a beautiful Alsace-inspired bottle. It’s beauty in a glass.

Drink it the day you buy it, or save it for three to five years and see how it develops.

There’s no wrong answer.

Viognier might be one of the best-kept secrets in American wine. Its flavor profile can run the gamut from semi-sweet to Sahara-like dry.

Today’s glass comes courtesy of Penner-Ash, one of my favorite Oregon producers, and Adam Sabir at Pearl & Vine.

Floral on the nose, with crisp fruit and citrus on the palate. It cut beautifully through the richness of P&V’s Texas Gumbo, and I’m betting it’ll be just as good with the Snapper Tostada.

If you haven’t explored Oregon wine, you’re flat missing out. And if you see Penner-Ash on the menu and pass it by, I don’t know what to tell you.

New week. New bottle of Jimmy Red Sweet Mash.

This time, it’s High Wire Distilling’s Double Oak offering, weighing in at a smooth and spicy 107 proof.

Vanilla and caramel lead the nose and palate, followed by a spice that hits the tip of your tongue and dances through the middle.

Another beautiful pour from High Wire Distilling, and one worth seeking out behind the bar at Whiskey Cake.

In the glass today is the 2022 Abadía Retuerta white blend from Sardón de Duero, Spain. A blend of 86% Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo, it’s crisp and clean, with just enough roundness from six months in new oak.

Tart citrus, grapefruit and subtle floral notes lead into a long, lingering finish. The perfect match for Socarrat’s branzino with sautéed spinach.

If you haven’t tried either, you’re missing out.

I saw this bottle in a Columbia, South Carolina liquor store last summer and passed on it.

Then it started showing up all over social media, and I’d regretted that decision ever since. Until today, when it appeared on the shelf at Federal Grill.

Made from Lowcountry-grown Jimmy Red corn, this bottled-in-bond sweet mash bourbon is beautiful. Caramel and vanilla on the nose and palate, followed by a buttery texture and a warm, spicy finish.

Worth ordering if you see it behind the bar, and certainly worthy of a spot on your own.

Now I have an entirely new reason to visit Charleston.

And for the record, my brother once gave me Jimmy Red grits. Odd presentation. Absolutely delicious.

Not sure which I prefer: the Meursault or Azul’s chicken street tacos.

With no disrespect intended to the rest of Burgundy’s communes, Meursault might just be my favorite when it comes to Chardonnay.

The 2020 Louis Latour Meursault is no exception. Crisp yellow apple and ripe pear lead into bright acidity, beautiful balance and that unmistakable elegance of white Burgundy.

It’s damn near perfect on a rainy Southeast Texas afternoon, paired with seafood or Azul’s chicken street tacos. IYKYK.

If you spot this bottle on a wine list or at your favorite local wine shop, buy at least two. You’ll want the second one. Trust me on this.

It should come as no surprise that today’s glass is a rosé… or that it’s from Bandol. I’ve waxed poetic about Provence before, and the 2024 Domaine Ott is exactly why.

Mourvèdre-driven, with rich red fruit while remaining crisp and vibrant. It should pair perfectly with the sausage Benedict at Pearl & Vine.

Then again… it would pair beautifully with damn near anything.

Sometimes I go looking for a tasting opportunity. Other days, it simply drops in my lap.

When the Viviente Mezcal rep walks into the store and offers to walk you through the portfolio, it would be impolite to decline.

Three artisanal mezcals. Three distinct expressions ranging from floral to citrus and herbs to crisp minerality, each with its own degree of smoke. None overpowering.

I certainly had a favorite, but all three were beautiful and had their place.

If you spot Viviente Mezcal at your favorite bar or local shop, take one out for a spin. You won’t be disappointed.
