SAFETY ALERT: Starting on Thursday, July 17, the Sulphur Ranger District will implement Stage 1 fire restrictions. Stage 1 fire restrictions limit activities with a high potential of starting wildfires, including, but not limited to, campfire use. The purpose of these restrictions is to protect public health, safety, and natural resources by preventing wildfires.

During Stage 1 fire restrictions open fires are only permitted within Forest Service installed and maintained fire rings in developed recreation areas and campgrounds maintained by hosts. In areas where campfires are permitted, visitors should remember to follow proper fire maintenance guidelines and fully extinguishing the campfire with large amounts of water until all of the coals are out cold.

In other areas of the National Forests, visitors may use heating devices solely fueled by liquid or gas and featuring an on/off switch or valve. Whether starting a campfire in a developed site or using an approved heating device, visitors should never leave a fire unattended.

For more information and a list of developed sites where campfires are allowed see the Forest Order: https://ow.ly/G4kl50WqCNr

Here's this week's Grand County fishing report. Week of 7/14/25. Summer is in full swing and with that comes great fishing opportunities on our lakes in the area! The warmer temperatures have the fish taking advantage of those cool mornings and evenings for prime feeding windows. Also normal for our summer season we are seeing frequent afternoon thunderstorms and lightning. Be sure be paying close attention to the sky and get to a safe place before the wind and lightning move in. It’s a great time of year to hit the water, be safe and see you out there!

Temperatures are warming up which means that mountain streams, rivers and waterfalls are all moving swift and dangerous. Even a few inches of swift-moving water can knock an adult off their feet.

For Your Safety:

💧 Hike on designated trails and enjoy the water from a distance. Don't hike off trail and wander down to the water's edge.

💧 Rocks near water can be deceptively slippery. Stay at least one body length back from the edge of riverbanks and waterfalls. All bodies of moving water have a strong current. The current of even shallow water can knock a person off their feet.

💧 Always keep an eye on children and make sure they stay away from the water's edge.

💧 If swift water is moving across a trail, stop. Don't try to cross. Turn back and complete your hike another day.

💧 If you see someone slip and fall into moving water, take the following steps:

- Stay calm and try to keep the person in sight.
- Do not enter the water and attempt to rescue them (this would worsen the situation as you could then be in a life-threatening situation as well)
- Look around and see if a branch, rope, throw bag, etc., can be used to help rescue the person(s) in distress
- Call 911 and report the location and that someone has fallen into swift-moving water.

Grand Lake isn’t trying to be the next big thing. That’s kind of the point.

It’s the kind of place where you know the shortcut to the ice cream shop, where the same folks have been running your favorite store for decades, where the mountains haven’t changed, and neither has the feeling you get when you’re here.

Summer here isn’t a checklist. It’s a memory you keep adding to. Come stay awhile. We’ll leave the porch light on.
