We've been getting some questions about how this year's lower water level on Lake Granby (at around 50%) will affect the ice fishing season. While it is still early (only October), here is how we predict conditions may unfold:

Timing: Less thermal mass can accelerate initial surface cooling, potentially helping the ice form slightly quicker once sustained freezing nights arrive.

Fishing Quality: Reduced water volume compresses fish into tighter, deeper channels and structural shelves. While this requires adjusting tactics to target narrower zones, it could make active fish more predictable to locate once you find the right drop-offs.

Access: Shoreline access may be more challenging than in typical years. Lower water creates steeper banks around traditional launch points. As we get closer to the tournament, we'll provide more detailed information regarding access points.

As a reminder, both Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Reservoir are maintained at 100 percent capacity, meaning anglers will likely experience normal ice conditions, and traditional access points with no changes expected for those two lakes.

Due to the forecast for snow, low visibility and freezing temperatures beginning tonight, Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park will be closing at 5 p.m. tonight, on Friday, October 23, 2026.

The closure points will be at Many Parks Curve on the east side of RMNP and at Colorado River Trailhead on the west side.

The recorded status line for Trail Ridge Road is available at 970-586-1222.

Sunshine, rain, and maybe a few flakes are all on this weekend's forecast in Grand Lake, and there's fun to be had in every kind of weather. 🍂

The Ghosts & Gourds Gathering fills Town Park on Saturday with free pumpkin decorating, face painting, costume contests, carnival games, and trick-or-treating. Plan on costumes that fit over a warm coat. 🎃

From the west side entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, about 10 miles of park road and every west side trail are open. Trail Ridge Road will close at 5 p.m. today, Friday, October 23, because of the forecast at higher elevations. The closure points are Many Parks Curve and the Colorado River Trailhead. A few tips for the weekend:
• Pack layers, a rain shell, and a warm hat 🧣🧤
• Watch for slick spots on morning roads ❄️
