Wine has been an integral part of my life for as far back as I can remember. Let me paint the picture with the following memories! Family gatherings with jugs scattered around the table, surrounded by food and good times. Aunts, uncles, cousins....birthdays, summer cookouts, and weekend visits. Vacations on the east end of Long Island, passing farms, pumpkin patches, and vines. Growing up in a hom
e heavily influenced by my parents Portuguese and Brazilian traditions, as well as being blessed with grandparents and an aunt living with us as well. Friends of my father dropping off bottles of homemade wine around the holidays. With every passing celebration, and even those of somber remembrance, wine found itself making an appearance: To toast. Once I was able to start exploring my journey into wine, visits to vineyards and wineries started occurring rather frequently. We were blessed to have some of the finest east coast winemakers within an hour and half drive of us. I’d get lost in the various iterations grapes took, as winemakers tweaked their craft in search of perfection. Long Island was teeming with vines, and as years passed, new vineyards would pop up for tastings. I soon fell in love with wine being produced out on the East End. A sense of pride began to consume me. Something so beautiful, intense, and complex, which I had no true understanding about, began to take hold. After years of growing up in NY, a move to North Carolina was in the cards. As I found myself reinventing my life a bit, I needed a way to busy myself. Prior to the move, I had been working in the music industry for years. Coming to North Carolina provided a blank slate for exploration. What happened next was unexpected, but looking back, it made total sense. As I walked past a wine store, a Now Hiring sign caught my eye. I walked in, applied, and was hired on the spot. Thus began my absolute dive head first into my new life path. Several years later, and a few wine shop jobs removed, I landed at Bar Brunello in downtown Durham. Prior to this, I had taken the necessary steps to become a Certified Specialist of Wine through the Society of Wine Educators. Without any intentions, I turned a love I had into a career. Who knows what the future may hold! I don’t know where this journey will take me. What I can say with certainty is that wine will continue to make new memories for me, just as it has done countless times before. I’m glad you’re joining in for the ride, and look forward to creating new ones with you all.
