Terrica Smith's journey from homelessness to real estate mogul is an inspiration. Now, as CEO of Cachet Real Estate, she's giving back with the Madeline Cove project, providing affordable housing to families in need. Her resilience and determination show that dreams can become reality, even in the face of adversity.

A gentleman came into my store and asked, “How did you resist the streets?”

I told him, “Black God—we all got a story. Just because you see me as the owner of a convenience store doesn’t mean I haven’t made bad decisions.”

I come from an abusive, fatherless, single-parent household. I had a child at 17. Family members used to tell me I wouldn’t live to see 21. What they didn’t know is that those words didn’t break me—they built something in me. A kind of fearlessness. If I wasn’t gonna make it to 21, then what was there to be afraid of?

My mom used to say I act like nobody’s bigger than me—and in my mind, she was right. The only people who could put fear in my heart were my grandmother and my uncle. Rest in peace to both of them. May the universal God be pleased with their souls.

At the rate I was going, I didn’t think I’d see 21 either. But I told that man—you are who you hang around. And at a young age, I chose to be around brothers from the Nation of Islam. I wasn’t Muslim, but I respected the discipline, the presence, the purpose.

I joined a community group called the Alliance of Guardian Angels. And through that, I had the honor of being around Reverend Walter E. Fauntroy—who I later found out was a civil rights activist, right-hand to Dr. King, and Congressman of D.C.

And through him, I met greatness.

I met three powerful men.

The first was the Honorable Dick Gregory.
The second was Reverend Jesse Jackson.
And the third—Activist Al Sharpton.

Imagine being a kid and getting to hear their conversations—raw, unfiltered, wise. That kept me grounded. That showed me what real men look like.

Now, I strive every day to be that kind of example—to be what they were to me, for someone else.
