BABA (PERANAKAN) WEDDING FESTIVAL IN PHUKET
22 - 24 JUN 2014 IN PHUKET OLD TOWN
The Peranakan, or Straits Chinese people, are also known in Phuket as Baba. They are the descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to the island seeking a new and better life by working in tin mines back in the 19th century. The annual mass Phuket Baba wedding festival brings back memories of the tin mining industry.

Experience all the elaborate preparations and see how the well-to-do Chinese immigrants celebrate their wedding at some of Phuket’s most elegant Sino-Portuguese mansions located in the old town quarter. Colourful street celebrations along Thalang Road decorated with red lanterns include a lively parade, a lion dance and more. It’s a great photo opportunity!

On the big day itself, while the grooms are looking smart in their white suites, the brides turn up in their striking traditional Chinese costumes, with special hairdos, vintage jewelry and accessories. There are specific traditions surrounding this annual festival that make up the rich cultural Baba wedding event and all items chosen for this event whether it’s the food, or colour and size of objects have special symbolism; are considered to bring good luck, prosperity and fertility.

Great care is taken to ensure that all rituals are done properly and without any interruptions. Here are a few ceremonies not to be missed:

Paying homage to Heaven and Earth Ceremony: The custom of the worship of heaven and earth has been a part of Chinese culture since the ancient times. Before starting a life together, the couple will bow in front of theheaven and earth altar or in front of the groom’s family ancestors altar to first pay homage to heaven and earth and then to the family ancestors. Pay attention to the worship table/altar!

Wedding Tea Ceremony: Also at the groom’s house, the newlyweds will kneel in front of the groom’s parents while offering tea to them. Then they will offer it to other members of his family by order of age; meaning from the grandparents and uncles, aunties to his older sisters. In return they will receive small gift back (it can be anything from cash to gold and jewelry). In addition to appreciating this ceremony, it is also hoped that participation will learn to understand the idea of gratefulness and appreciation (of the children) toward parents and elders. It’s a concept that has been running strong in most Asian family for centuries.

Super Moon
— June 23, 2013

Be sure to look out for the Moon these next few months as it approaches Perigee, because the full moons during these times will appear exceptionally large. The Moon will be at its Perigee, or closest approach, in June 23 and it will reach full moon only a few minutes after it passes this point in its orbit.

These ‘super moons’ not only appear larger because they are physically closer but, combined with a full moon, the mind can play tricks on you to think they are much larger. This phenomena is called the Moon Illusion. Try to catch these full moons as they rise/set because the illusion works when there is an object in the foreground, like a tree, building or mountains.

Ingredients are all fresh and include: lots of "Pak Kood" (edible fern), lots of fresh sliced garlic and red onions, dried chili powder, BBQ small mackerel meat, roasted grated coconut, fish-sauce, kaffir lime and lime juice, little bit sugar and roasted shrimp paste. — feeling great. Phuket Activities
What to Do in Phuket

Any time of year, rain or shine, you're spoilt for choice in Phuket. With an abundance of beaches, parks and forests to explore, a rich history and culture to discover, and fantastic dining and nightlife choices, the only thing you'll find lacking is the time to see all that the island has to offer.

The range of activities in Phuket continues to grow in sophistication and variety, offering visitors of all budgets, tastes, ages and abilities something to enjoy.

Your vacation experience will be more extraordinarily amazing if you purchase an island hopping tour. Its surrounding islands are one of the reasons why Phuket is regarded as one of the best beach destinations in the world. Go beyond to Phi Phi Islands, Phang Nga Bay, Koh Panyee, Similan Islands, and Khao Lak to bathe and relax on the best beaches of Phuket. You will also enjoy snorkelling and diving at its best. But a vacation in Phuket is not only all about first class beaches. There are other numerous of outdoor activities you can do besides from beach and water sports activities. It is a must to try some of the outdoor activities to complete your Phuket adventure. Here is a list of outdoor activities in Phuket, Thailand to help you out.

ATV Offroading

So far, Phuket has one of the best ATV trails we have been to. It provides an adventure you shouldn't miss. There are many companies/travel agencies which offer different ATV Tour packages. The tours differ from the number of hours and additional outdoor activities. The minimum ATV tour is 30 minutes with a maximum of three hours. More hours mean more activities and more food! Though it is up to you how you want your day to be. But most of the locals really recommend the three hours tour. Most of the packages that has a three hour ATV tour may have an added white water rafting, waterfall trip, and trip to a local village. The trails also vary. Some have bumpy, narrow-rugged trails. There are trails that lead you to an unspoiled beach. Some may even require you to cross a river. The most exciting ones are uphill and downhill trails. So you must prepare yourself to experience an exceptional ATV adventure.

Just be reminded to inquire the company/travel agency the things you need to bring with you. Some tours may not offer drinking water so you have to make sure. The tour fee though already includes the protective gears, both a helmet and a pair of gloves. A photographer is also present among the trails to take pictures of you during your ride.

Do you know Phuket's Season?

The Cool Season
The cool season is from November to February. The northeast winds start sometime in November bringing an end to the rainy season. The cool season is the best time of year to visit Phuket. There is lots of blue sky, very little rainfall, lower humidity and the temperatures are comfortably hot. This is Phuket's high-season with the peak of visitors coming over the Christmas and New Year period.

The Hot Season
The hot season is from March to early May. The weather is dry and the skies blue but some people find the temperature is a little too hot for comfort. This is mid-season for Phuket. There are still a lot of visitors but the hotels start to lower their rates around this period as demand drops.

The Rainy Season
The monsoon winds from the southwest start in April or May and bring the rain. The highest rainfall comes in May, September and October. In these months it can rain for long periods. These three months are definitely not the time of year to come if you want sun or outdoor activities. However, June, July and August are good months to visit. During these three months, there will be plenty of rain but it usually falls in short heavy bursts. In between, the weather is pleasant with comfortable temperatures and a cooling breeze. There will often be periods of several days without any rain.

The six months of the rainy season are Phuket's low-season. Hotel rates are slashed and you can generally get lower prices from tour operators, vehicle rentals, boat trips, etc. The months June, July and August are still a popular time to visit as people take advantage of the low season prices. May, September and October are quieter as it is just too wet for most people.

One important warning. The rainy season winds bring large waves and dangerous undercurrents to Phuket's western beaches. Every year around 20 people drown during Phuket's rainy season. Red flags are raised on the beaches to warn of dangerous conditions. Do not swim in the sea if there are red flags.
