The transformative work achieved by Alain Vauthier and his daughter at this storied estate—perched upon the decomposed limestone slopes of St.-Émilion—cannot be overstated. Their relentless pursuit of perfection is best evidenced by their rigorous selection process: roughly half of the total production is relegated to the second wine, the Chapelle d’Ausone.
The 2012 Chapelle d’Ausone presents a dense ruby/purple hue, opening into a rich, expansive palate. It offers a sophisticated bouquet of plum, blueberry, and black raspberry, underscored by delicate floral notes and the signature minerality of powdered chalk. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is strikingly pure, possessing remarkable length and concentration.
In many respects, this bottling surpasses the Grand Vin iterations of Ausone from the 1940s through the 1980s—a testament to Vauthier’s viticultural legacy. This is a formidable second label with significant aging potential.
