Winemaking in Switzerland traces back to Roman times. The defining characteristic of Swiss wines is their remarkable variety and diversity, a result of the complex geography and multicultural environment. The unifying element is the Alpine environment, which imparts a distinct freshness, cleanliness, and mineral quality to the wines.
Dairy farming and cheesemaking are deeply ingrained ancestral traditions in Switzerland. The breeding of cattle, sheep, and goats for milk can be traced back to the Neolithic period, and cheese exportation from the Alpine regions has been a practice since ancient times. In the modern era, Swiss cheese dairies and mountain pastures produce an impressive range of over 700 cheese varieties, encompassing textures from soft to extra hard.
