“Yapp’s own-label was one of the first rosés I tasted this spring and despite extensive tasting I have yet to find a pink that beats it for simple but upbeat pleasure and value. From a co-operative in the Ardèche, on the western bank of the Rhône, it’s a dry pink that smells like wild strawberries and is made from about 70 per cent grenache with 30 per cent merlot. Quentin Blake designed the label. I want it by the case.”

Today our travels took us to Appenheim in the Rheinhessen where we visited Jürgen Hoffmann ()

We visited his hundert gulden vineyard (Grosses Gewächs) over looking Rheinhessen (nothing better than tasting the wine whilst standing in the plot it came from) the wines tasted are fantastic, his Rieslings are stellar and put German wines firmly on the map. 🍇

His new 2025 vintage arrived with us last week, try them, amazing! 😍

The team has travelled to Germany this morning and today visited the beautiful and picturesque castle and winery, fab tasting and show round by Karsten and the team.

Followed by an evening stroll in beautiful Trier!
Off for a flying visit to the Rheinhessen tomorrow

🍷 We had Richard Maby ()with us in London on Wedensday, who’s delicious Liracs and Tavel we’ve been putting on good tables both in homes and restaurants since the 1970s.

It was great to introduce Richard to , who’s been serving his fantastic red Lirac ‘La Fermade’ for over twenty years, starting at the original Racine in Chelsea and now featuring prominently on the list at , undoubtably one of the most in demand tables in the country. has also listed it from the start of our tenure together at in 2021 - it looks booked in for a similarly long stint being a natural bedfellow to the world-class USDA steaks the group is famous for!

🍇 Of this 2023 vintage, Richard says ‘this is the wine I’ve wanted to make all my life’ – it has outstanding purity and is supple and generous with soft, juicy tannins but not at the expense of structure. It’s a great example of why we should be buying more wines from regions like Lirac, offering superb value for money when compared to more heralded AOCs.

Also singing were three 2025s; Liracs white and rosé and a beautiful Tavel, which is more of a light red than a rosé and fabulously versatile. All showed well with a delicious lunch at - if you haven’t been yet, we strong recommend you do!

It’s always fab when The Bunch get together for a press tasting, 6 brilliant (if we say so ourselves) independent wine merchants always showing the best of the best to the press.

With our fellow indies Haynes Hanson & Clark Tanners Wines Corney and Barrow and Lea and Sandeman we gathered in St James’s yesterday and opened some beautiful bottles to show the press.

🚨Just three weeks to go until our Spring portfolio tasting, and here is the first preview of one of our exceptional producers who will be joining us on the day: Christian Yves Carré de Lusançay of in Gigondas.

🍷Vignerons in Gigondas since the 17th Century, the Meffre family have played a pivotal role in shaping the reputation and evolution of the appellation. Roger Meffre was President of the AOC when it secured Appellation Contrôlée status for Gigondas in 1971 and he helped modernise the region’s winemaking laws - increasing the permitted Grenache content from 65% to 85% in 1985 - a change that has profoundly influenced the style and quality of Gigondas wines today.

🍇 The 34-hectare Domaine Saint Gayan, with 12 hectares located in the heart of Gigondas, is now run by Roger’s son Jean-Pierre Meffre, his daughter Julie and her husband and winemaker Christian Yves Carré de Lusançay. Under their stewardship, the estate continues to produce some of the commune’s most distinguished wines, as well as first class Rasteau, Côtes du Rhône and IGP Méditerranée.

Their approach balances tradition with thoughtful evolution. Wines are typically matured in large oak barrels, preserving purity and structure, while recent additions of clay amphorae reflect a commitment to gentle, terroir-focused winemaking. Whole-bunch fermentation remains central to their philosophy. The domaine is also renowned for releasing wines only when they are ready to drink.

This is a fantastic opportunity to taste these benchmark wines and meet a representative connected to one of the Rhône Valley’s most historically important estates.
