Clos Rougeard 2015 — Saumur-Champigny, Loire Valley
Since moving to France, I’ve noticed a distinct preference for very dry reds. It’s perhaps little surprise, then, that the w**es of the Loire Valley remain so popular, offering freshness, structure and, more often than not, excellent value.
However, after hearing much enthusiastic praise from French friends and w**e-trade associates, I finally succumbed to the hype and purchased a bottle of Clos Rougeard 2015, one of the most celebrated names in Saumur-Champigny, made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.
Deep, dark red in colour, the w**e opened with aromas of redcurrant, followed by an elegant, flavourful palate of hedgerow fruit and savoury character. Bone-dry, full-bodied and persistent, it certainly possesses structure and length.
That said, I couldn’t help feeling that, despite its considerable reputation, it remained very much within the familiar stylistic framework of Loire Cabernet Franc, with that characteristic, slightly stalky finish. Beautifully made, certainly, but perhaps not quite the revelation I had been led to expect.
Clos Rougeard is no bargain, and sought-after vintages command formidable prices. For me, the question remains whether its reputation and price tag justify the premium over other fine examples of from other areas of France.
