Its been brought to my attention that a few people have attacked the Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners on posts relating to the recent weekend events and claiming it was them that cancelled the Maritime Festivals.
First of all, please dont be rude and complain about a free event. Suggest new ideas to the organisers by all means but dont complain. Now, as to the substantive question, let me tell everyone that it was me as CEO of the Festival Company and with the full backing of the board at the time who made the decision not to have the events again.
Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners gave us free reign for 18 glorious years and were not involved in the decision or the reasons why we came to that decision in any way. Problems with H&S, costs and the all important lack of volunteers were among the collective reasons why I called the meeting and recommended that we close the company down. There was no one reason, just lots of issues that were falling on an ever smaller number of volunteers every year.
