📚 Wine Term of the Week: Bouquet 📚

Bouquet isn’t just a bunch of flowers—it’s the complex aromas that develop in wine as it ages.

You might pick up scents of fruit, spice, earth, or even leather and to***co in more mature bottles.

Take a moment to swirl and sniff your next glass—what aromas do you find?

📚 Wine Term of the Week: Acidity 📚

Acidity gives wine its freshness and zing. It’s what makes your mouth water and brings balance to the flavours—especially in white wines.

Wines from cooler climates (like Germany or New Zealand) often have higher acidity, making them perfect with food.

What’s your go-to wine for a zesty, refreshing sip?

📚 Wine Term of the Week: Body 📚

When someone says a wine is “full-bodied,” what does that mean?

Body is the weight or fullness of wine in your mouth—think of it like the difference between skimmed milk (light-bodied) and cream (full-bodied).

Our range includes everything from crisp, light-bodied whites to rich, full-bodied reds.

Do you prefer something light and refreshing, or bold and intense?

📚 Wine Term of the Week: Tannins 📚

That dry, slightly bitter sensation that makes your mouth feel like you've just licked a teabag? Those are tannins!

Tannins are natural compounds found in grape skins, seeds, and stems. They add structure and complexity to wine and help it age gracefully.

Red wines typically have more tannins than whites because they're fermented with the grape skins. Our Italian Sangiovese and Spanish Tempranillo selections showcase beautiful, balanced tannins that pair perfectly with food.

Pro tip: If a wine feels too tannic, try it with protein-rich foods like cheese or steak – they help soften the effect of tannins on your palate.

How do you feel about tannic wines? Yay or nay? 🍷

📚 Wine Term of the Week: Appellation 📚

“Appellation” is a fancy word for a wine’s official place of origin.

It’s more than just geography—it’s a guarantee of quality and style. Think of names like Champagne, Rioja, or Chianti: these aren’t just places, but protected wine regions with strict rules.

At Great Wines Direct, we love seeking out appellations that offer something truly special.

Which wine region do you always trust for a great bottle?

📚 Wine Term of the Week: Legs 📚

Ever noticed those streaks that form on the inside of your glass after you swirl your wine? They’re called “legs.”

Legs are formed by the alcohol and glycerol in wine, and while they look beautiful, they don’t actually tell you much about quality. What they do indicate is the wine’s alcohol content and body.

Next time you swirl, take a look—just another little detail that makes wine so fascinating!

What’s your favourite wine to swirl and sip?

📚 Wine Term of the Week: Vintage 📚

More than just a fancy word for "old," a wine's vintage tells you the year the grapes were harvested.

Why does this matter? Because weather conditions vary dramatically from year to year, affecting the quality and character of the wine. A rainy harvest might produce lighter wines, while a hot, dry year often results in bolder, more concentrated flavours.

At Great Wines Direct, David personally selects exceptional vintages from small family estates. Our 2018 German Rieslings, for example, benefited from that year's perfect balance of sunshine and rainfall.
