After the recent aged Monte I got the chance to experience something a bit special. I headed to an event at the Hippodrome Casino run by the magnificent Soho ci**rs. On the menu a Temple Hall Soutar Pyramids No. 2. They are Jamaican ci**rs and had the box date of 1961! This date refers to when they were received by Dunhills in London so the ci**rs likely predate this. These came in a 50 cab and I was lucky enough to get mine from the middle of the deck! These ci**rs come unbanded and have taken an almost hexagonal box pressed form. You can really see the age on the wrapper. They are slightly smaller than a modern day number 2. I eagerly lit this cigar and was greeted by some floral notes I could definitely taste the age on this stick. The floral notes quickly gave way to nutty biscuit with a salty twang. Very reminiscent of a Cuban cigar. I’d say it was a light start that developed into a medium strength cigar in the final third. These paired wonderfully well with a negroni and Carbonite 19 year old rum. I was seriously impressed by this rum might be one of the finest I’ve tasted. A special experience all round.

I’ve had a number of perfectos this year and decided to add to the repertoire and the Hoyo De Monterrey Elegantes LCDH. This isn’t my usual Vitola but I am coming round to them! This stick felt very firm to the touch and I was concerned of possible plugging. I used my LFL cigar knife to cut the cigar and upon the light the draw was firm but smokeable. I’m immediately greeted by the classic Hoyo DNA the light smoke gave notes of milk chocolate, cedar, a hazelnut and a sweet biscuity note. I have to work a bit for the smoke with the draw but it is delicious. The second third and the chocolate, woody, nutty notes are still prevalent with an apple note added for good measure. It’s creamy with a touch of saltiness. The draw has opened a bit but I decide cut just a bit more from the head of the cigar which does help a bit. I’m impressed with the burn line on this wavy in some places but evened out without the need to touch it up. The final third is more of the same but with the woodiness at the forefront

Some ci**rs mean more than just the the smoke they give. This Oliva Serie V Melanio Gran Reserva Robusto was gifted to me by my best mate when he asked me to be his best man! I settled down to smoke it with the football on in the background. I haven’t had a bad Oliva I think they are fantastic new world ci**rs. The cigar has a box press to it and is adorned by 2 bands. The cut I get some damage to the wrapper it seems quite thin. The first third I get an earthy cocoa note, there’s a breadiness to it and a sweetness the retro is a little peppery. Good start the second third creamy cocoa nuttiness. The final third and the wrapper finally gave up the ghost. I finished off the rest of the cigar in its naked form! Earthy spice and a blackcurrant note to finish off. Very enjoyable but have to knock a couple of marks off for the wrapper.

I recently bought a Mantis silicone ashtray from Cgars and decided to add the mystery cigar. I like this concept is fun to get a random cigar and try something new on this occasion I got the Charatan Original Robusto Cigar. This is another new brand ticked off for me and I enjoyed this cigar. It was smooth from the off, think woody and latte notes. There’s some sweetness and a hint of spice. It’s creamy and has an impressive smoke output. The ash was a brilliant white although a little flakey in places. Enjoyable cigar.

I forayed back into the Plasencia world and this time the Alma Fuerte Robusto. This cigar has an impressive box press to it. It has a dark toothy Maduro wrapper with 3 black and matte gold bands. It’s definitely a treat for the eyes! I straight cut the triple cap and take a pull of the cold draw. I get an almost floral and a lemony citrus note from it, interesting. The light reveals a rich dark cocoa and raisin note with just a hint of spice nothing overpowering. As it progresses to the second third I get an Asian spice like a cardamom join the party this actually really goes well with the cocoa note. There is some fruitiness and some cedar notes too. The final third I get dark chocolate, earthy espresso. This cigar smoked for around 2 hours and produced bundles of smoke. Another solid outing from Plasencia.

The latest release from Zino is the Zino Honduras. I had the Robusto and as the name suggests it contains Honduran to***co. The wrapper has a lovely dark brown oily sheen to it. The band is red as appose to the yellow on the Nicaraguan one. I get a dark chocolate malty note on the cold draw. You can tell immediately from the light this packs a bit more of a punch than its Nicaraguan counterpart. There’s a strong earthy woody note and a spice that tickles the tongue. As the cigar settles in to the second third the spice eases off but the rich woody, earthy notes remain. There is a sweetness I can’t quite put my finger on. The construction as ever is fairly impressive this thing smokes like a chimney. Just before the final third this cigar took a massive downward spiral for me the cigar became very dry and acrid to the point of being unpleasant. I persevered through this for the sake of the review. I tried to purge the cigar and attempt to clear it out but it remained bitter. Maybe it requires a longer time to rest in the humidor. I reached out to a friend who had smoked the toro at the weekend who said he didn’t experience the acrid taste. I find the Zino Nicaragua a solid if not unremarkable cigar. I was hoping the Hondouran one would be a similar stronger version and it’s not quite there for me.

Last year I visited the wonderful Palais Du Ciagre in St Tropez. I spoke with the owner who showed me around his store and some wonderful ci**rs. I still regret not picking up the box of Fundadores! I did however pick up one of his own robustos. He advised me to have a good meal beforehand! This is a Nicaraguan cigar and has a smooth dark Maduro wrapper and a classy black gold and white band. The light revealed lovely Earthy woody chocolate noted there’s a pleasant light sweetness to this cigar. As it progresses I pick up a slight liquorice note to go with the woody chocolate flavour. This has a good strength to it without being overpowering. The cigar ramps up in gear in the final third the wood, earth and chocolate notes intensify and there is a hint of pepper heat. This cigar lasted for almost 2 hours very impressive and I enjoyed reminiscing about the South of France as I smoked this one.
