Arden Fine Wines has this 1934 Château d'Yquem .

Spring was warm and there was a major heatwave in summer (19 days over 35°C).

Heavy rain on 31st August set botrytis going and picking began on 7th September.

This was intense and went on totally uninterrupted – which is very rare – until the last grapes were picked on 4th October.

This is a memorable Yquem showing remarkable finesse and purity.

It is a deep amber to mahogany colour – the result of nine decades of evolution.

The aromas include caramel, molasses, butterscotch, and candied apricot.

On the palate, it has remarkable racy acidity that perfectly balances its luscious sweetness, preventing it from feeling cloying.

Overall, it is a great Yquem vintage that exemplifies the estate’s near-limitless ageing potential.

Château Margaux 1956 at Arden Fine Wines.

The 1956 Bordeaux winter will leave a lasting memory for its record cold weather – it dropped to -20°C in Bordeaux and the Garonne river had blocks of ice floating along it…

Numerous vineyards in the Bordeaux region suffered due to the cold snap – though the vines in Margaux suffered very little.

Château Margaux would only experience a terrible winter like February 1956 again in January 1985, when the temperature dropped almost as low.

You can find this 1956 red wine for sale – Château Margaux 1956 – at award-winning Arden Fine Wines in London.

1979 Petrus – available for same-day delivery in London.

Although 1979 was generally considered a trickier, lighter vintage across the broader Bordeaux region, Petrus managed to deliver a balanced wine that has allowed it to age for decades.

It is dry, savoury, and classic with a medium-ruby colour.

At over 45 years old, it has retained excellent freshness and grace.

Chateau Musar 1956 at Arden Fine Wines in London.

This is arguably the finest wine made anywhere in 1956.

It is remarkable for its longevity.

Serge Hochar, who was Musar’s winemaker from 1959 until his death in 2014, was assisting his father Gaston with the winemaking in 1956.

By 1959, Serge had taken sole control of the winemaking.

That year, he oversaw the bottling of this 1956 Chateau Musar.

It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan.

The ultimate red wine for a 70th birthday or anniversary in 2026.

1978 Château d'Yquem at Arden Fine Wines.

In 1978, the weather in Sauternes was very dry from August to November, which meant that conditions were not conducive to widespread “noble rot”.

The harvest at Yquem was late, starting on 25th November and finishing on 7th December.

Yields were very low and the amount of wine made was minuscule – only 20% of the total 1978 crop was sold as Château d’Yquem.

A lighter style of Yquem, light and floral rather than rich and saccharine.

1956 Château d'Yquem at Arden Fine Wines.

It was a terrible year for the vineyards of Bordeaux but Sauternes escaped the worst of the big freeze.

Inevitably, it was a late-ripening year for the grapes at Château d’Yquem.

The harvest began on 8th October and finished on 21st November.

Overall, the 1956 is an extremely fresh, elegant Yquem – one of the best wines of 1956.

DRC Montrachet 1996 from Arden Fine Wines.

Montrachet’s reputation is as the greatest dry white wine in the world, thus it has a lot to live up to.

Tiny, at just 1.65 acres in size and with vines whose average age is 65 years, DRC produces an incomparable Montrachet.

Indeed, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti cultivates its oldest vines there.

The 1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Montrachet Grand Cru represents the pinnacle of white Burgundy.

Ultimately, only 3,101 bottles of DRC Montrachet 1996 were produced.

One of which is available at https://ardenwines.com/product/drc-montrachet-1996-price/

What to drink during a heatwave – Chêne Bleu Le Rosé.

Salmon-pink in colour, with aromas of white fruit and flowers.

Round and fresh on the palate, with nice length and texture derived from the skin contact winemaking technique – a short maceration, not the traditional “saignée” method.

Best enjoyed with shellfish, lobster, salmon, spring rolls, fruit, or chocolate – especially in the company of Chantal Coady and Nicole Sierra Rolet .
