I got the power!

Yes, our electricity is on and the shop is open although, everything in the fridges and freezers is spoilt including milk, cheese, bacon, pizzas, chips, chicken....

We will get Morfa Milk later today for those who usually order it.

I'm really surprised that the facility to open the hall for the community to go to for tea and coffee, maybe some hot soup, and a warm place to sit and chat for a few hours wasn't in place.

Obviously, they don't have a generator which may be a priority to get for future incidents like this.

I wonder why this part of the Country, with so many trees, put their minimal infrastructure attached to pylons and not underground?

The technology for doing this has been around for decades, actually, decades into the last century but it appears this hasn't been started...such a shame.

This is where the money should've gone instead of the 20mph scheme!

The majority rely on electricity, even for our oil boilers to work.

Like everyone, we've had no heat, no light and have had to keep our shop closed, therefore, we've lost business.. but we will get over this.

I hope our vulnerable people have been coping ok.

A massive thank you to our wonderful friends and neighbours, (Gary and family... and I know you were there in spirit, Sam), for coming in one day a couple of weeks ago and SEALING all the windows on the bus.

You all gave up your own time to help us and never charged us a penny... we are both truly grateful for your help and kindness.

It was a big job that should have been completed ages ago, (another job we were let down on), and we've been worried about any leaks, especially with all the driving rain!

Thank You, Team Gary, Sam and Family xx 🥰

So, the inside of our bus is very slowly coming together but we need to begin the work on the outside. We urgently need someone or two people to seal the outside of the upstairs windows and place vinyl over the top to double-seal them. If you can do this or know someone who can/will do this, please ask them to call 07456 977 393 or pop in the shop.
We also need some scaffolding to enable the above to be carried out, if anyone could loan some to us.
We really need to get this project over the finish line. We've been so let down by many people, including locals, which is a real shame. The community needs this hub, we don't want another Christmas to go by without it.
Even if you can only spare a couple of hours, it's better than nothing.
Please help in any way you can... We need Plumbers - Gas Safe, Carpenters, Painters, general labourers for Sanding Down, Jet washing the Bus...etc., etc.
Thank you.

Mark Williams, Lib-Dem Candidate, turned up at our shop. I missed him but Dara had a lovely chat with him and thought he was a charming and respectful man.

We've not seen any other candidates!

*** WE ARE NOW OPEN ***

We have, in writing, confirmation that the pavement and the parking will not be touched, i.e.....

DIM NEWID - NO CHANGE

Thank you to the whole community for supporting us and a special thank you to Wyn Thomas who has worked very hard to get this confirmation in writing! xx

*** SHOP CLOSED - DAY 2 ***

Once again, we apologise profusely to the whole community. This is NOT what we want to do but we felt that we have to put our money where our mouth is, especially seeing as the whole community supported us with the protest but the Council are still not listening!

All we asked for was to have Highways meet us at the site and have a civil discussion about the impact of changing the pavement/road and the parking. Still, although I put my objections to the plans in writing, (as requested), nothing has happened, and no one has conducted a site visit?

We hoped that Rhodri Llwyd, Head of Highways, would come and speak with us, or at least one of his team with the 'power' to change things.

We've spoken with several people from the Council, Highways, the Development but all say different things and nothing is in writing so, as far as we are concerned, the plans are the plans are the plans......etc.

I'm not sure what's going on with Ceredigion County Council but they all seem to 'go to ground' when big issues pop up. Are they just way too important to talk to 'ordinary folk'? I do hope not.

Our Council Tax is soaring and we have fewer amenities to show for it.

Our bus service was axed but the Council, in their wisdom, spent our money on a NEW BUS SHELTER?? Are they about to put the bus service back?

Llanarth rubbish tip is threatened with closure?? It's popular and useful. Close that and you'll see instances of fly-tipping increase. I imagine they want to impose a charge for collecting unwanted bigger items??? As they say, "one man's rubbish is another man's gold"!!!!

Sorry, I digress..!!

*** We Have Closed The Shop ***

This is our private protest and we're VERY SORRY for the inconvenience to all, but this will be the future if things continue as planned... NO SHOP!

Work has started on the pavement area WITHOUT ANY FORMAL DIRECTION FROM CEREDIGION COUNCIL. As far as we know, meetings are still taking place, BBC News was told the Council's response would be in 48hrs.... nothing yet!

Some of us have had INFORMAL conversations with several people. Conversations I've had have also suggested that this development's footprint is larger than the original property/land - i.e., it takes up some of the original road.

I'm not sure if that is the case but the current developer has offered to reduce the development by about a metre.. this is unusual but could this metre be the original 'land grab' from the first developer's plan? Again, this was an informal conversation.

We're being told different things by the council, the developers, highways, etc., which version is the official one?

We all have a valid and genuine argument here, this won't go away by paying lip service to us so please, 'the authorities' don't patronise us, it's insulting!

We and the community are fortunate to have people whose families have lived here for generations, and they know the area very well - we trust them more than anyone else.

Wow! What a turnout yesterday at the protest! That is what a real community looks like, standing shoulder to shoulder in unity. You are all fabulous! 💖

A massive thank you to all who attended and those who couldn't make it, we know you were thinking of us.. thank you for your very kind messages.

We are planning another protest on Sunday afternoon if the planned works haven't been amended or preferably, stopped by then.

I spoke to Highways this morning, and they told me that hatch markings will be painted on the road instead of altering the pavement plus, the parking for customers will remain the same.... but, Ceredigion Council are still discussing this, (no, I haven't been invited to these discussions, I believe they are behind closed doors!).

Here's a small clip from the beginning of the protest.

Dara and I would like to thank everyone for your comments, shares and signatures, we've had way over 200, fast approaching 300!

I must mention the farmers as this will affect them too. They regularly come down Croeslan Road towards the junction with big lorries and extra-large trailers. They have to move onto the opposite carriageway to turn left onto the main road up towards Horeb - again using the opposite carriageway on that road too. The planned extra piece of pavement will impede that, especially, as I've been told a BOLLARD will be put there!

The whole community want to keep things as they are;

DIM NEWID - NO CHANGE!

In 2020, the plans submitted for development had a Section 106, (or similar), put in place by Highways - this is what we are fighting to remove.

At the time, the speed limit was 30mph. I don't know how many metres the entry/exit is from the newly built houses to the junction, but it's not that close. The new residents will have a clear sight of the junction from there, even with cars parked along that stretch of Croeslan Road.

The S106 was meant as a traffic calming measure, to mitigate the risk of accidents, the speed limit is now 20mph across the whole of Wales, surely this mitigates those risks, and Section 106 is not needed at all?

I've asked the Highways Engineer to visit the site and see for himself, and so has Dara, but he's refused because not only does he live outside the County, but he also lives outside the Country, in Mid/North England. He's never been to the site so relies heavily on others and likely uses a Planning Simulation Package but I wonder what data is being fed in, (in 2024), to carry on getting the same results as 2020, this shouldn't happen.

Plus, why did Ceredigion Council give this consultancy to someone who doesn't reside in Wales, I'm sure we must have such a person? This would've made a massive difference, having someone close by to conduct a site visit to see how our village goes about its business.

Don't forget, Tuesday 2nd April @ 10am, for the demo/protest!

DIM NEWID - NO CHANGE

28/03/2024

Changes to pavement and parking next to our shop.

I was told by the site manager of the new build that the change to the pavement on the original plans is the responsibility of the developer to implement, out of his own pocket.

Redrow submitted these plans in 2020 and I believe that a section 106 agreement, (or something similar), was put in place as a traffic calming measure.

The current developer bought the site from Redrow - along with all of these issues!

Highways concern was for the residents of the new build exiting their homes.
The entry/exit is way up Croeslan Road. They have a very good sight of all roads from there, better than most around here.

At that time, Highways would have run this through their simulation software using base figures, i.e., distance to junction and speed of traffic. An S106 was probably suggested because of the outcome of these tests.

This is rather defunct now because Wales has implemented a 20mph speed limit.. a TOTAL traffic calming measure, if you like, for the whole country!

Surely, this is enough mitigation?

Prynhawn da!

Everyone who drops by this page will know that I don't post very much, in fact, hardly at all due to my poor concentration, etc., because of ckd but, I'm making an exception today.

For about a week I've been in touch with Ceredigion Council and specifically with a Highways Engineer regarding the planned works to extend a pavement into the carriageway next to our shop at the junction of Croeslan Road.

This will have a detrimental impact for our shop with regards to delivery lorries and on our customers being unable to stop in a safe place because they are going to make the area a No Parking Zone.

The site manager stated, "it is illegal to park within 10m of a junction". This is true but if the said piece of carriageway is a designated parking place, i.e., it is painted as such with signage, it becomes a perfectly legal place to park.

I've also contacted Tivy Side Newspaper and forwarded to my contact, all the information I have and since late yesterday afternoon, we began getting signatures from our customers via a petition, so far, we have 74... and they are still coming in.

I've emailed written objections regarding this to Ceredigion Council, these have been sent to and received by Highways. My understanding; is that written objections should halt these works until an engineer visits... but this doesn't appear to have happened yet. As far as I know, the works are still going ahead.

Apart from affecting us and our business, as usual, this new installation will severely affect the most vulnerable in our society.

The current pavement is over two metres in width, therefore, it meets the current legislation.. apart from further up the road which needs addressing...so, let's keep things as they are;

Allowing people to park there.
Allowing parents to safely get their children onto and off the school buses.
Allowing the farmers down the lane to move freely in and out with their farm vehicles and trailers.
Allowing our lorries the space to safely deliver goods to us.

As the saying goes, if it's not broken; don't fix it!

Please support us and the whole community by signing our petition in the shop or just sending a message of support here - it will be seen.

UPDATE! The road will be closed from Tuesday 2nd April for Dwr Cymru to carry out their work. This is when the site manager wants to install this new pavement layout and stop people parking there.

Join our demonstration at 10am on Tuesday 2nd April 2024 on the pavement as a show of support and solidarity. We all need to stand together to fight this so our community can carry on as it is.

We hope this will be attended by the press, it looks like it will be.

Thanks for reading
