Three days at the London Wine Fair, and what a week.

Ben Furst joins as Business Development Manager. With more than 25 years in the fine wine and premium drinks industry and a WSET Diploma, Ben has spent his career building exceptional portfolios and developing trade relationships with some of the most respected wine houses and hospitality groups in the UK. His expertise, and his network, will be a real asset to the business.

Richard Banks is working with us as a Brand Ambassador for three of our South African producers: Bellevue, Eagles’ Nest and Ridgeback. In this role, Richard helps connect trade customers and wine enthusiasts with the stories, character and people behind these remarkable estates.

Both bring real depth of knowledge and genuine passion for wine. We are thrilled to be working with them.

South African wine is having a moment, and it has been a long time coming.

For years, the Cape was known mainly for Pinotage and bulk production. That version of South Africa still exists, but it is not the whole story. Not by some distance.

Today, the Cape produces some of the most interesting wine being made anywhere in the world. Stellenbosch is turning out structured, age-worthy reds and serious Chardonnay. Swartland, a drier, wilder region to the north, has become a magnet for producers obsessed with old vines, minimal intervention, and Rhône varieties. Old-vine Chenin Blanc, long used as a blending grape, is now recognised as one of South Africa's greatest winemaking assets.

The common thread? Character. South African wine at its best has a warmth and energy that is unlike anywhere else, paired with a freshness that stops it from ever feeling heavy.

It is exactly this quality that drew us to building a South African collection at Portman Wine. We are not the only ones who have noticed.

Pinotage is South Africa's own grape, and Bellevue Estate is one of the names most closely associated with it.

The estate sits in the heart of Stellenbosch and has been producing wine for generations. There is a depth of knowledge and a sense of place at Bellevue that comes through in the glass. This is not a winery chasing trends. It is a producer doing what it has always done, and doing it very well.

We had Luan from Bellevue on our stand in Bristol last weekend, pouring wines that drew people back for a second taste. For good reason.

South Africa's finest wines, all under one roof. We'll be there.

Tim Atkin's Best of South Africa 2026 takes place on 6th May in Central London, and Portman Wine will be exhibiting.

For anyone with even a passing interest in what the Cape is producing right now, this is the event to have in the diary. It is one of the most respected showcases of South African wine in the UK calendar, curated by one of the world's leading authorities on Cape wine.
