If you spotted someone wearing a beekeeper suit at the kgv playing fields this evening that was me rescuing this swarm. They are all safe in their new home now.
Now that the weather is finally warming up, swarms are likely to happen.
A swarm happens when a hive becomes overcrowded, a new queen appears and the old queen and a gang of around 20,000 go on the run. They head for temporary lodgings while scout bees look for somewhere safe to settle.
Bee swarms may look terrifying but, in reality, they are armless: bees stuff themselves with honey before they head off, which makes them particularly docile. You can be very close to a swarm and they won’t sting you. If you spot a swarm, please send us a message and We’ll happily give those bees a new home.
