that the British Royal Navy served their sailors a daily ration of , famously known as the “daily tot,” from 1655 until 1970? Why, you ask (though who really needs an excuse for a bit of rum 😉)?

Initially, sailors quenched their thirst with beer, as the water on board grew algae, making it undrinkable, but the beer it would often spoil before they reached their destination 🤢. In 1655, the switch to rum was made—it didn’t spoil in barrels and took up less cargo space. Plus, it was a much-needed morale booster for the crew! 🙏

Life aboard a ship was tough, and the daily tot gave sailors something to look forward to. However, in 1740, to curb drunkenness, the rum was watered down with sugar and lime juice, creating what was known as “grog.” 🍋‍🟩🥃

On July 31, 1970, a day now known as Black Tot Day, the last daily tot was ceremoniously poured.

Did you know? 🍷 Not all red wines are best enjoyed at room temperature!⁠

Wines have tannins, which give them that bitter, astringent bite. Older, bolder reds like Bordeaux and Malbec are packed with tannins, while lighter, younger wines like Pinot Noir have fewer. Chilling can accentuate these tannins – great for lighter reds, not so much for the bolder ones. For those lighter, fruitier reds, a little chill tames the alcohol and brings out delicate fruit flavour & aromas.⁠
