Well, it’s been a great-great-great five weeks working with the fantastic .oceania machine by the glass - we’ve seen a host of incredible wine through it, dazzled guests with the rare, hard-to-find, fancy and cool. This week’s offering is pretty next level; a grand finale. Of course, your gaze will be drawn to the puce-coloured label of Overnoy, but the wines around it stack up and then some too:
+ Philippe Chatillon Vin Jaune 2014 - One of the living legends of Jura and deeply experienced. This is power and grace, a formidable Vin Jaune of saline minerality and distinct, nutty savouriness. Unreal.
+ Francois Rousset-Martin Savagnin Oxymore 2020 - FRM, as is the colloquial name for these wines, is rarely seen off fancy wine lists and is tucked away by collectors. Here’s savagnin through the lens of oxidation - rippling with energy.
+ Serafino Rivella ‘Montestefano’ Barbaresco 2020 - Classic, stylish, serious, fine tannin. Serafino Rivella are stellar producers, old school-good school and this wine is mind-blowing for finesse and power.
+ Daniel Sage Prosperite de l’Enterprise 2022 - Idiosyncratic but in control, that’s how we talk about Daniel Sage. This is merlot and carignan, so fine, so fresh, so refreshing, so cool. Pristine, lightweight red.
+ Sami Odi ‘Our Hill’ Syrah 2022 - Who even pours these? No one, well, not that we know. This is from the home vineyard, out the back of the winery. Barossa syrah in surround sound and bristling with energy.
+ Maison Pierre Overnoy Poulsard Trousseau 2020 - Well. What to say? You’re running to get some, surely…? It’s purity and sunlight and red fruits and spice. It’s sublime. The most democratic way to share wines like this… we’re good for it x

The line up .oceania continues with a stellar quintet, with a few more surprises coming ex-cellar over the weekend. First up, this glorious lot, by the glass (half and full), showing off the serious side to a deep cellar and respect for these special wines. Live at L’Avant Cave this weekend.
Maison Valette Macon Chaintre 2015 - well, whaddya say to this? One of the world’s most intriguing chardonnay, all saline and mineral and textural and great.
Jean-Yves Peron Pierra Menta 2022 - A fresh cuvee with the variety gringet the star. Fifteen days on skins for hazy texture and cumquat-meets-amaro tang.
Cherouche Grand Yaye 2015 - The wines of Cherouche are really having their moment. This alpine, Swiss red is all brooding dark fruits and autumnal dried leaf and earthiness. Special.
Philippe Pacalet Nuits-Saint-Georges 2013 - Now with a dozen years age, all softened and beautiful with its benign decay - a class act from a cult producer and showing savouriness and elegance
Philippe Pacalet Gevrey-Chambertin 2013 - more of the same but a bit more dark fruit, black olive and wild herb going on. Some silty tannin profile. Supple and charismatic.

Whoa! The .oceania is fired up again for the week and ready to do half and full glasses for your pleasure. A little dig into cellar and we’ve landed on some Aus gems and some wines he just reckons are in the zone. The line up, epic, rarely seen by the glass... 2020 Domaine Dandelion Haute-Côtes Nature + Helmed by Morgan Seuillot and Christian Knott, a ‘rare bird’ with only 2.5 hectares of old vines to speak of. A pinot noir of uncompromising beauty.

2017 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro + As always with Wendouree, a wellspring of eucalyptus and other Aussie bush scents layered over dark cherries, lavender and black olive brine and stately tannins

2016 Wendouree Malbec + ‘Evocative’ doesn’t really come close to pinning down the bewitching perfume of red roses, raspberries, musk and Middle Eastern spice here. Wowee. And what incredible length, too.

2019 Sami-Odi Hoffmann Dallwitz Syrah + Savoury and serious as, with building tannins that amplify the tension between dark berries, dried herbs and leafy, autumnal character. Dense and intense, but with uncanny elegance and lift.

2014 Sami-Odi ‘N’ Semillon + A unicorn to end all unicorns here. Oxidative semillon bottled in 2020 after six-and-a-half years un-topped in barrel. The kicker? Less than a barrel made! Never sold! Only gifted! And as such, tasters will be given away free of charge. As in, you can taste this work of wonder without paying a cent!

2020 Robinot L’Iris + Produced from chenin blanc from vines around 90 years old, from the expert hands of cult winemaker Jean-Pierre Robinot, this comes under his L’Ange Vin label and is known for its amazing minerality, attractive oxidative characters and complex, layered flavours...

New to our .oceania this week - a tribute week to some of our favourite humans Living Wines. Straight up, natural wine wouldn’t be anywhere in Australia without Sue Dyson and Roger McShane, the intrepid Tasmanian importers who started Living Wines in 2008. Long before catchphrases like ‘low-intervention’, ‘spontaneous fermentation’ and ‘no sulphur’ were common parlance, these two were scooting around France, forging connections with the likes of Philippe Bornard, Jean-Pierre Robinot, Alice and Olivier de Moor along with other leading lights. Their indomitable portfolio now spans some 65 producers, whose wines are the envy of keen-eyed collectors worldwide and a constant on the best restaurant and bar lists across the country.

Needless to say, we love Rog and Sue, and we can’t believe how deep in the cellar they’ve dug to deliver this ballistic line-up to drink from the Enomatic machine at our Paddo wine bar, L’Avant Cave. Huge gratitude to the wonderful duo… This week it’s again next level: + 2011 Domaine Bornard Les Chassagnes – A holy grail Jura savagnin, made by Philippe himself some years ahead of his retirement. Sue herself says: “I will try not to think about the consequences of parting with this…” + 2018 Belluard Les Alpes – Before his shocking and untimely death, Dominique Belluard crafted this alpine epic.
+ 2020 Jean-Pierre Robinot Bistrologie 2020 – Chenin blanc from a true, picked from 40-year-old vines and rested on lees for 15 months. + 2019 Alice et Olivier De Moor 2019 Aligoté ‘Plantation 1902’ – Fashioned from vines that pre-date phylloxera, planted in 1902. + 2016 Bruyere & Houillon Les Tourillons – The one we all know you’re waiting for. It’s 80/20 blend of chardonnay and savagnin. Special. + 2020 Michel Gahier Le Clousot – never sleep on Gahier. And never sleep on trousseau from Gahier. See you for half and full glasses until they run out x

Whoa! By the glass, of the future! For the next month we’re going deep on very, very special wines. We’ve partnered up with .oceania and will have this wine dispensing tech all July to help us share incredibly rare, cellared and hard-to-find wines. Each week will be a different collection, bottles replaced as they sell out. We’re grateful for our deep cellar, but also amazing friends from Living Wines (with more to be announced) for helping kick off our launch party - with more to come… stay tuned for line-ups. First up: Cotat Cuvée Paul 2007 (yes, and in scintillating form!), Bornard Vin Jaune 2015 (power and presence and vibrancy), Gravner Ribolla 2016 (hedonism, beauty) and Rinaldi Tre Tine Barolo 2020 (all the finesse). If you’ve never tried these wines, or curious as to how they’re drinking, well, let us Enomatic you… very cool. We start now! Glasses at the ready. Pouring prettily. X
