win for 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

After a year away from racing, the birth of his first child and joining under it was time to test the waters again.
The goal for the weekend was simply to enjoy being out on course, set no expectations, and race… The result? An overall win!

A choppy swim, hot and hilly bike, and a very exposed run — typical Malaysian extremes!

Well done 👊🏼

PBs and smiles a plenty from the RPGers at but have to first highlight the Lizard’s cracking performance taking 5th Aussie in the elite field.

The challenge is real as tried to accommodate everything he has going on from to Dadding, to swimming and cycling and more. Lots of adjustments as we go but he got his goal with a cracking performance!

You've only got so many times you can properly go to the well.
Don't use them up in training sessions and not be able to dip to the depths of your soul when it counts in races.

Careful not to get so caught in the physiology of training that you neglect developing your race skills.

“Naaa” I hear you say, “triathlon just one big long time trial and the fittest guy wins. “
Tell me you haven’t raced much without telling me. 🤪

Along with the minimum of the 10 000 hour rule of training/ practicing swimming, cycling and running I think it would be tough to find a world champion in triathlon who doesn’t have at least 100 races under their belt before making it to the top.

I don’t mean go out and race 50 Ironman events (although there are world champions who went that path prior to a Kona win)but race short, race often, don’t taper too often and have fun.

What skills and knowledge are you gaining with lots of racing? Here is just a few..
- Dealing with open water conditions and humans all over you when you’re at race intensity in the swim.
- Identifying your ideal race weight that’s fast but healthy and sustainable.
- How to come back from mid race set backs; everything from hypoglycemia to a bike mechanical.
- How to pace your run based off how the how you’re feeling off the bike or the competition you’re running alongside.
- How to manage moving through aid stations in silky smooth style.
- using your power efficiently on the bike. The highest output doesn’t necessarily ride the fastest time. Bike racing /Grand Fondos is a great way to learn how to manage your output for optimal return.
- Time racing at speed in wind and the skill to not let it affect you too much.
- Handling pre race pressure or post race disappointment.
- Identifying what taper works best for you?
- How to legally use the (dumb cos it should be longer) rule to your advantage.
Etc etc- the list is endless.

City 2 Surf Pacing Tips

1) If you're pretty pumped up heart rate can be really high with the adrenaline of the start that it can be unreliable until a few kilometres in when it will start to normalise. Initially use RPE (rate of perceived exertion) or if you happen to have a food pod that monitors power and are aware of your zones, that is a great way to control your output early so you don't self implode from going too hard too early.

2) Using pace to guide your effort over a hilly course doesn't work.

3) attire is always faster for effort. It's indisputable science.

In the interest of his long term health Coach was informed by the RPG members that he would be doing . To ensure he would participate Clint was told he would be fundraising for the incredible to pound out the hilly 42.2kms. It’s probably the last thing he wanted to do but as a selfless human we knew once the donations rolled in he couldn’t say no. Please help apply further peer pressure for him to lower his blood pressure and get him training again by donating to the link below to see him get through the Sydney Marathon. Even 10 bucks is massive appreciated.

Being part of the RPG community means not just learning from the coaches. Our open chats with athletes and coaches often revolves around talking to experienced athletes and working through where they think they could improve both in their prep and with their race tactics.

There can be some disappointment when those enquiring realise that most of our coaches are capacity.

It's still worth making contact with us and letting us know which coach you're keen on working with. The coach can still get to know you and let you know when a spot might be coming up.

Real coaching is worth the wait!

While there might be some wait you should be encouraged that our coaches keep a firm cap on their maximum number to ensure the quality of service stays at the high RPG standard. Additionally we have some new coaches joining the team who are super well qualified and hold the same coaching values which is why we actively chased them to join the team.

put in some bulk miles on the lead up to Ironman Western Australia 2023. He raced terrifically there and he may have thought that would be the end of his high level racing as he had to reduce his training hours drastically as he began a new job.
However John has been on a barn storming run of results including a podium at the World Championships in New Zealand despite much lower training volume and more recently, having a second child

How?

Every block of training you do doesn't disappear. There are long lasting physiological changes with big training blocks and maintaining the bulk of those adaptations or at least really slowing the decline is a lot easier than the original load required to get to that level.

John might get to a point where he realises he has to go back to banging out some really big base weeks if his incredible fitness starts to really fade but for now, he's still training really cleverly under Coach Clint with the available time he wants to apply without compromising Dad, husband or work life and is also cashing in on the years of work he's done in triathlon up to this point.
