This beautiful expression of Saperavi by just got here and we’re head over heels about it!
The only wine of its kind coming from WA, this wine comes from young vines in the Perth Hills and Swan Valley.
With aromas of cherry cola and dark chocolate overtones, a surprisingly zingy palate with a sour cherry character, dusty tannins and a long, dry finish.
We know what we’ll be drinking tonight!
But what is Saperavi?
Saperavi (saw-pear-ah-vee) is an ancient grape variety from the most ancient winemaking region in the world, Saperavi is indigenous to the Republic of Georgia.
The name Saperavi means ‘dye’ in Georgian, reflecting the extremely dark colours of the wines it makes.
This is due to the fact that Saperavi belongs to a small group of grape varieties known as teinturier grapes.
What’s unique about teinturier grapes?
These grapes not only have red skins, they also have red pulp or flesh.
Most red wine grapes have clear pulp, and the colour is obtained when the clear juice comes in contact with the skins.
The juice from Teinturier grapes, however, is itself red, becoming deeper and darker in colour when it comes in contact with the skins.
Additionally, the pulp of these grapes contains the pigment anthocyanin, which has powerful antioxidant properties.
What to expect from wines made of Saperavi grapes?
Varietal Saperavi wines are powerful and often compared with Cabernet Sauvignon.
These wines are full in body, with high acidity and tannins and good ageing potential.
Aromas of autumn berries, ripe dark fruits, cassis and spice. Earthy and smoky notes with flavours of cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant and plum with hints of leather, liquorice, chocolate, coffee and even to***co.
When oaked, expect additional flavours of cedar and vanilla.
